Congratulations on your new family member! We want to ensure the transition from our home to yours goes as smoothly as possible. Please review the SMF Cavy Care page along with the below helpful advice to set your cavy up for the best of success!
- Allow your cavy to adjust to its new environment. All of the new smells and sights can be quite overwhelming for your little guy! Try to resist handling it much in the beginning and it will warm up to you soon enough.
- Refrain from providing frequent vegetable treats, especially in the acclimation stage. Watch for soft stools as this can be a sign of too much veggies. They can become quite ill and perish with an overabundance of treats.
- Always allow access to fresh water (with Vitamin C) food pellets and hay to munch. This will keep their digestive system running smoothly.
- Monitor your cavy closely for any physical changes or changes of behavior. Also, cavies housed together may not always get along. They usually sort themselves out but there may be times they need some space from each other. Please contact me if you are not sure.
- Do not allow your cavy to get big mats! Our long-haired varieties are considered relatively low-maintenance in grooming, but a small mat can sneak in every now and then. Especially if you are using shavings as bedding.
- Trim your cavy's nails regularly. Do not allow them to get too long.
- Please keep in touch! We would love to hear from you and include you in our Happy New Homes page.
